Entry-level modules
Entry level training modules can be devised to address either or both field structural skills or field rock and mineral identification and sampling skills. The aim is to provide a level of basic field experience that may have been missing in the original training of the geologists. These modules are particularly useful in providing bridging training for technical staff moving into junior geological positions. The modules can be biased either toward structural training or toward rock/mineral/alteration identification and sampling training.
Module topics (not exhaustive)
- Orientation measurement of planes and lines in the field (strike/dip/dip direction; plunge/plunge direction)
- Basic mapping procedures. The importance of mapping contacts and form lines versus transect or point data collection
- Scale considerations. Keeping an eye on the big picture
- Interpretation maps vs 'fact' maps - the importance of continuous interpretation during the mapping process
- GPS fundamentals, ranging from basic usage to understanding datums and projections
- Basic map and cross-section preparation. (Note that the terrane-specific modules include cross-section techniques appropriate to specific situations)
- Obtaining structural data from maps using topographic effects
- Allowing for topographic effects during interpretation
